Michael's History
As a child, Michael Dix enjoyed the frozen custard his Mom and Dad made at home with a hand crank machine filled with ice from a nearby lake. His love for the frozen treat never faded, and one day while biking down Monroe Street he spotted an old gas station in disrepair. He and his partner John Kuehl developed a business plan, leased the building, and worked day and night to get the store operational. With little money and big dreams, Michael and John realized their dream of owning a business when the Monroe Street Michael's opened on August 22, 1986. It was an instant success because of the business philosophy: Create a high quality product, have great service, and provide and atmosphere where people feel comfortable.
Soon after the opening of the Monroe Street store, plans were underway to open a second store in Verona. The Verona Michael's, also a renovated gas station, is filled with automobile memorabilia. The Verona store opened on October 5, 1987.
Atwood Ave was the next location on the drawing board. Also a remodeled gas station, the Atwood Michael's is reminiscent of a 1950's diner with the stainless steel exterior and red booth interior. The Atwood store opened on May 10, 1989.
John passed away September 1, 1993 but his memory will live forever in those who knew and loved him.
The Schroeder Rd store was opened on June 20, 1995. This great location next to Vitense golf course was a welcome addition to the busy Westside neighborhood. This store includes a drive thru window and expanded outdoor seating.
In April of 2000, Perry McCourtney joined the company focusing on the future vision of Michael's in addition to the day-to-day operations.
In May of 2002 Michael and Perry started distributing Michael's pints to area grocery stores. You can now find Michael's in over 80 markets throughout Wisconsin.
Today, Michael and Perry's philosophy is the same as it was back in 1986: Focus on quality products, great customer service, and give back to our community.
The popularity if Michael's shows with being named "Best of Madison" 18 years in a row, in addition to "Best in Wisconsin" by Wisconsin Trails Magazine!
